Bond and Bulgari

Ageism. That’s what’s on my mind today. Bear with me here, it may take a few minutes for this all to hang together (Bond, Bulgari, and Ageism), but it will.

I saw the new Bond movie, Skyfall, this weekend. While the movie was at times a bit slow for my taste, I appreciated that they addressed ageism. I don’t want to throw out any spoilers, but we all know Bond and M have been knocking around for some time and that comes up. Hard not to give too much away here. Suffice it to say I appreciated the acknowledgement of the issue and found the treatment tasteful. The film is definitely worth watching.

The next day I was flipping through a magazine while waiting for my haircut, and saw an ad for a new line of Isabella Rossellini for Bulgari bags. The ad stars Isabella (60 years old) herself. I love that they didn’t find the ubiquitous beautiful 14 year old to pose with the bags. Isabella is an icon, and one of the most elegant women of our time. Our culture devalues women as we age. I’d love to see more of this; aging women portrayed as vital, beautiful, creative, and valuable.

Judi Dench and Isabella Rossellini… I am inspired.
